Gurunavi and Tabelog Japan?s top restaurant sites

What is most useful reference for restaurant info? graph of japanese statisticsjapan.internet.com recently reported on a survey by goo Research into eating and drinking establishment usage, with this article focusing on web sites used for getting such information.

Demographics

Between the 19th and 23rd of April 2013 1,098 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.6% of the sample were male, 13.4% in their teens, 15.1% in their twenties, 21.3% in their thirties, 17.6% in their forties, 15.2% in their fifties, and 17.4% aged sixty or older.

I don?t really use these web sites much, as I tend to just visit a few regular places, and these places don?t have coupons that I can use. However, for work events our usual organiser uses mostly Gurunavi, and occasionally Tabelog.

As you can see if you follow the links, Gurunavi is the only place with English, although much of it is machine-translated and -transliterated, so the restaurant names come out rather wonky. Picking one from their selection for the day, it is listed as YAKINIKUDEN YUNIBAHSARUSHITEIWOHKUOOSAKANAITEN, but writing that as ?Yakiniku Den Universal City Walk Osaka Naiten? would surely be more understandable!

Rhino poachers, meet your match: poisoned pink food dye

With rhino poaching on the rise, efforts to eradicate the practice are getting more creative. Dyeing rhino horns pink and tinging them with non-lethal poison is one way to discourage consumers from buying them.

By Emily Mellgard,?Guest blogger / May 22, 2013

Rhinos are being hunted systematically by well-armed and well-organized poaching crime syndicates for the profits to be had from rhino horn in the illegal wildlife trade. Perceived by organized criminals to be high profit and low risk, the illicit trade in wildlife is worth at least US$ 19 billion per year, making it the fourth largest illegal global trade after narcotics, counterfeiting, and human trafficking.

Demand for rhino horn increased exponentially over the past few years. The market is heavily concentrated in Asia, particularly Vietnam. Rhino poaching has leapt to keep pace with demand, and South Africa?s rhinos are among the most affected.

According to the?Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA), between 2010 and 2012 the number of rhinos killed for their horns went from 333 to 668. So far in 2013, 216 rhinos have been poached in South Africa?s Kruger National Park alone. That is more death the past five months than in the years 2000-2008 combined. The rhino population in Mozambique, which was wiped out by large game hunters a century ago and later reintroduced to the national parks, has again been eradicated, this time with the?connivance of some of Mozambique?s own rangers.

Convictions for poaching and trafficking in rhino horn are rare. But the US Attorney?s office in Los Angeles, California?announced on May 16?the conviction of Vinh Chung ?Jimmy? Kha, and Felix Khaon for, among other crimes, smuggling rhino horn into the United States with the intent of selling it to Vietnam.

In Vietnam, and other parts of Asia, powdered rhino horn is considered a cure for everything from a headache, hangover, or cold to cancer, and is also often advertised as an aphrodisiac. It holds no such properties. In fact, rhino horn is keratin, the same substance as human hair and fingernails. Despite this, rhino horn sells for between $25,000 and $40,000 per kilogram.

A?Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) conference in March 2013, appears to have invigorated the international community to act to save these creatures.?South Africa is?threatening to re-erect the boundary fences?between the South African and Mozambican halves of Kruger.

Some game parks in South Africa have taken the additional measure of?poisoning their rhinos? horns?to deter consumer demand. The poison is combination of a parasiticide normally used against ticks on livestock and a pink dye that can be detected by airport scanners and is visible even when in powdered form. That means potential consumers will know what they are buying.

The parasiticide is not lethal, but it does make the consumer seriously ill. A logical next step is campaigns to raise awareness of rhino horn?s complete lack of medicinal properties and that the animals die, horribly, through the process. Similar campaigns are running in Asia against elephant poaching. They are spearheaded by celebrities such as China?s?Li Bingbing, an?actress, and United Nations Environmental Programme goodwill ambassador and retired NBA basketball player?Yao Ming.

These initiatives are key because they focus on a crucial truth ? anti-poaching and conservation efforts must be holistic to be effective. By addressing conservation efforts not just at halting the poachers, but also in decreasing the demand for rhino horn altogether, poisoning the horns and educating consumers is an important step forward.

Unity game engine goes free for iOS and Android, BB10 and WP8 to follow

Unity game engine goes free for iOS and Android, BB10 and WP8 to followUnity, the multiplatform game engine, has gone free to use for iOS and Android. The company made the announcement at its Unite Nordic conference in Malm?, Sweden, according to Keith Andrew of PocketGamer.

Unity started life as a Mac-specific development platform, but nowadays developers can also create content using Windows PCs, and deploy on a total of ten different platforms including the Web. Up until now, delivering content onto iOS or Android platforms has required you to pay $800, regardless of which license you're using.

Unity said it plans to offer the same deal for developers interested in deploying to Windows Phone 8 and BlackBerry 10 platforms as well.

Unity helps game developers create 2D and 3D games alike. It's the engine that powers games like Madfinger's Dead Trigger 2, Rovio's Bad Piggies, Imangi's Temple Run 2, and many others.

The company has long offered "Unity Free" and "Unity Pro" licenses in order to accommodate indie developers. Unity Free is a "no strings attached" deal - you can use the tech to develop your game without paying any royalties or license fees. Once you start raking in money, you're required to upgrade to the Pro license, which costs money. The Pro license also includes access to a number of functions and features that aren't accessible for free - graphics and audio improvements, 3D modeling enhancements and more.

Developers who have recently forked out the cash to deploy to iOS and Android will be eligible for discounts to help recoup their costs.

Brighten Up Your Living Space With These Helpful Home ...

Your living space continually influences you as you go about daily life. It affects your mood and outlook. Your home is intended to be a place where you can be comfortable, entertain and enjoy some rest and relaxation. When you decorate your home in a way that expresses your personality, you will be happier spending your time there. This article has tips that will help you make your home a more relaxed and comfortable place to spend time.

When considering home improvements, keep your own comfort in mind. Even though everyone?s house has some flaws, you should make sure to fix anything causing you major discomfort. Small changes can make your life more pleasurable. You can replace your kitchen chairs and table or maybe buy a nice sofa.

Enlarge your storage area. Running out of room is common and when it happens to you, you may want to think of expanding. Even just a few feet of extra space can reduce clutter and stress.

Turn your home into a place that you enjoy being. Installing a pool, hot tub or sauna can make your time at home enjoyable. You can also opt for more affordable options, such as a basketball net, home gym, or other recreational project.

It is easy to overlook the tremendous difference high-quality lighting can make in the appearance of the home. If you replace the lighting in a home, it can make it very different and cause less strain on your eyesight.

Start being a gardener. Look around your yard, and select a bright, sunny spot that would be ideal for your garden. Or, consider landscaping the entire yard to make it an enjoyable haven. If you do not have the leisure time or the talent to maintain your own garden, you can still reap the benefits by hiring a professional lawn care person. Adding any type of garden area to your home will also help in cleaning the surrounding air of pollutants, as greenery is a natural filter. Additionally, depending on what you choose to grow, freshly picked fruit or vegetables can grace your dinner table every night. Your meals can be enhanced with fresh herbs, while your decor is perked up with a bunch of your own flowers.

Alter the outside of your home. Changes like a new roof or a paint job can make your home look so much better. Whenever you make it home from a hard day, you will pull up to a nice place you love to call your home.

Since you spend so much time at home, you are much happier overall if you are happy with your house. Home improvements are great for increasing your home?s value and improving your well-being.

Wall Street advances as Home Depot, JPMorgan buoy Dow

By Leah Schnurr

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks gained on Tuesday after Home Depot raised its profit outlook, while JPMorgan rose after its chief executive won a vote of confidence from shareholders.

Shares of the two companies helped lift the blue-chip Dow as the broader market picked up steam in the early afternoon, sending indexes to fresh intraday records.

Comments from a top Federal Reserve official also boosted the market as they eased some concerns that the central bank could start to reduce its stimulus program, known as quantitative easing, or QE.

"It looks like with regard to QE, they're considering a slower exit rather than a faster exit," said Bucky Hellwig, senior vice president at BB&T Wealth Management in Birmingham, Alabama.

"That brought some buying into the market this afternoon."

After a 17 percent rally for major indexes since the start of the year, investors are trying to gauge how much further equities can run. Goldman Sachs said in a note to clients dated May 20 that it sees the S&P 500 at 1,750 by the end of the year - up 5 percent from Monday's close - and expects a 12-month rally to 1,825.

The bank's economists forecast above-trend growth in U.S. gross domestic product in 2014 - for the first time in six years.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> gained 68.09 points, or 0.44 percent, to 15,403.37. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> rose 5.44 points, or 0.33 percent, to 1,671.73. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> added 9.83 points, or 0.28 percent, to 3,506.26.

The Dow climbed to an all-time intraday high at 15,418.53, while the S&P hit 1,674.17.

The small- and mid-cap Russell 2000 <.toy> continued to face technical resistance at the 1,000-point level, but the index hovered around its all-time closing high.

JPMorgan Chase & Co shareholders voted to allow Jamie Dimon to keep his chairman title, sending the bank's shares up 1.7 percent at $53.20.

The housing market's recovery helped Home Depot report higher quarterly sales and earnings, prompting the world's largest home improvement chain to raise its sales outlook for the year. Home Depot was the Dow's biggest percentage gainer, up 3.2 percent at $79.21 after hitting an intraday record high of $79.40.

New York Fed President William Dudley said he cannot be sure whether policymakers will next reduce or increase the amount of purchases, due to the "uncertain" economic outlook.

The Fed's current $85 billion per month bond buying program has played a significant role in the market rally and investors have become nervous over when the central bank will alter or halt the program.

Investors will be parsing testimony by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke before a congressional panel, the Joint Economic Committee, on Wednesday morning, while the minutes of the Fed's latest policy-setting meeting will also be released later that day.

"Central banks have been flooding the world with liquidity, and one place that's gone is into the stock markets," said Brian Gendreau, market strategist at Cetera Financial Group, based in Los Angeles.

Still, a reduction or end of the current quantitative easing program wouldn't necessarily mean the end of the rally, as a better economic outlook should offset the change to monetary policy, Gendreau said.

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook was testifying before Congress after a U.S. Senate report on the company's offshore tax structure said the iPhone maker has kept billions of dollars in profits in Irish subsidiaries to pay little or no taxes to any government. Apple shares were up 0.1 percent to $443.25.

Saks shares jumped more than 8 percent after the retailer reported better-than-expected sales in the first quarter. Its shares shot up 8 percent to $13.26.

Samsung plans to launch 65-, 55-inch 4K TVs in June

Samsung plans to launch 55, 65inch 4K TVs in June

When Samsung unveiled its first 4K Ultra HD TV at CES this year, it said other sizes would follow, both larger and smaller than the initial 85-inch version. Now it's apparently ready to fulfill part of that promise, announcing in Korea that 65- and 55-inch models will launch next month. Of course our next question is how these smaller models will compare to the $39,999 MSRP 85S9 UHD TV in price. Hopefully they'll follow the path blazed by Sony, which recently introduced models at that size with pricing well below the $10,000 benchmark, although we expect Seiki's 50-incher will still hold the crown for value pricing. The press release mentions they will feature Samsung's upgradeable Smart TV platform and the "micro dimming ultimate" LED lighting of their larger cousin, but the odd "Timeless Gallery" frame / stand (pictured above on the 85-incher) was not listed.
