Innovation Or Authenticity? | Bill Plake Music

There seems to be a conflicting theme these days expressed by some veteran jazz musicians (from the widely know to the more obscure)?about the current culture of young, ?up and coming? artists.

On the one hand, I hear many complaints about the lack of individuality in sound and approach perceived in many of these young musicians: ?They sound generic. There?s nothing that identifies them immediately in what they play. When Coltrane, Miles or Monk played, ?you could tell it was them in one note.? (I?m paraphrasing here.)

On the other hand, there are complaints about a ?culture of innovation? amongst younger artists ?that is sometimes perceived as being overly self-conscious: ?What they?re playing sounds so forced, so unnatural. It doesn?t have a strong enough connection to the tradition. It comes across as too cerebral. It doesn?t swing.? (Again, I?m paraphrasing.)

I?m not here to agree or disagree with the sentiments expressed above. Rather, I?d like to talk about this conundrum specifically. I?ll start with this rhetorical question: As an artist, is it more important to be innovative or authentic?

Both innovation and authenticity have great value in art. In the world of jazz, some of the greatest, most influential improvisers have been stunningly innovative.

Besides the three I mention above, we have Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Lester Young, Ornette Coleman, and Charlie Christian, Kenny Clarke, to name but a few. All of these artists have radically opened up the possibilities of self-expression in jazz by expanding and redefining the role and/or capabilities of their respective instruments in the act of improvisation (or in the case of Mr. Ellington, compositional and orchestral possibilities).

But we also have a wealth of artists who are less innovative, yet highly influential and highly valuable to the jazz lexicon. For example, Cannonball Adderley, Kenny Dorham and Kenny Barron, though they didn?t ?expand? the boundaries of the music to the degree some others have, are strong and vital influences to the music. ?(Great artists with distinctive voices on their respective instruments!)

Whether more an ?innovator?, or more a ?traditionalist?, or ?stylist?, all great artists have one thing in common: Clear, immediate authenticity.

As Thelonious Monk said (another powerful innovator in jazz!), ?A man?s a genius just for looking like himself.? I think it?s safe to say all the musicians I?ve mentioned above most certainly fall within Mr. Monk?s definition.

Which brings me to my point: Whatever you want to do as a musical artist, place authenticity first.

By allowing for authenticity (yes, allowing), you free yourself from expectations. (You have nobody to answer to but your own muse, your own impulse to make music.) You free yourself from lots of stifling judgements about your music. (It doesn?t matter how ?unique? your music is, as long as it flows freely and generously from you.)

In essence, when you express yourself authentically through your music, you are in a constant state of gratitude. You accept the music that comes through you as a gift, and you share it with the world. You are open and welcoming to so much: ideas, sound, connections with other musicians, time, rhythm and more.

I think it?s important to keep in mind that the vast majority of innovators in the history of jazz weren?t trying to be innovators. They were just working with the materials of music as they found their way to their own need for artistic expression. They were?looking like themselves? as they followed their curiosity and passion.

It?s probably impossible to consciously try to make music that is ?innovative?. For music to be deemed innovative, it must, by definition, change the course of the art form, and significantly expand the vocabulary of the expressive language. It must have a measurable, lasting influence on the artists of the present and of the future. That?s huge. You can?t force that happen out of sheer will. It either does or doesn?t.

Just like the greats, all you can do is follow your curiosity and passion.?If your music is?innovative, it will most likely rise from ?a natural and authentic curiosity. Curiosity about the materials of music, curiosity about your instrument, curiosity about yourself. And passion as the fuel for action (practice and study).

Aim for making music that is truly beautiful to you.?Don?t second guess it. If it touches you, it will, without doubt, touch others. And that makes what you do so valuable. Don?t let the need for innovation steer you into making music that isn?t beautiful to you. (Likewise, don?t let the fear of unknown artistic territory keep you from surprising yourself with new musical discoveries.)

Allow the possibility that your viewpoint (tastes, ideas, values, perception, etc.) can change and grow. As I get older, my music making seems less conceptual and ?cutting-edge? to me, but so much richer, more clearly conceived, more expressive and more beautiful than ever before. (It?s more me than ever before.)

Whether or not your musical expression falls well inside the mainstream, or far from it, if you hear and feel something that lights you up, ?go after it. As long as it?s it?s truly yours, you?ll be glad you did.

?Who are you?? is the question that can best guide you. So take plenty of time to stay on the path of self-discovery as you cultivate your curiosity and expand your possibilities. Enjoy the beauty you create along the way.

GM recalling 40,859 cars for potential fuel leaks

(AP) ? General Motors Co. is recalling more than 40,000 cars sold in warm-weather states because a plastic part might crack and cause a fuel leak.

The company is recalling Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 sedans from the 2007 through 2009 model years and Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent SUVs and Saturn Ion sedans from the 2007 model year.

The recall affects vehicles sold or currently registered in Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada or Texas. Owners in Arkansas and Oklahoma also are included in the recall of the 2009 Cobalt and G5.

The vehicles have plastic parts connected to the fuel pump which could crack. If the crack gets large enough, fuel could leak out of the vehicle and cause a fire.

GM says there have been no reports of fires or injuries related to the defect. The company began investigating the issue in 2011 after a dealer reported fuel leaking from some vehicles.

GM says its warranty data indicates that the problem is far more common in warm-weather states. It will repair the vehicles for free in those states. Owners will be notified of the recall by mail.

But the company also plans to send letters to owners in other states offering a free repair within a limited time period if the parts are cracked. That offer is valid for 10 years or 120,000 miles from the date the vehicle was sold, spokesman Alan Adler said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced the recall on its Web site Saturday.

Looking for the perfect vet for your pet? First, look inward | Jersey ...

Ask the Vets is a weekly column published by The Record. This question was answered by Dr. Heather Troyer at Oradell Animal Hospital in Paramus, N.J.:

Question: How should I choose my pet?s doctor?

Answer:

Recently, a friend asked me what I would consider to be the most important things when trying to establish a good client-doctor relationship. The obvious context is how I try to improve upon my relationships with my clients, and make sure I am serving their needs appropriately.

However, I also have had to choose doctors for my own pets. I don?t take care of my own pets. I can?t. It is extremely hard to be objective when you are in love with your own animal. I believe that making sure you have a vet who not only cares about your pet but also believes as you do is a very important part of your pet?s health care.

When you are trying to find a good vet, you must first decide what kind of client you are:

  • Are you the type to follow a standard vaccination protocol without asking questions?
  • Do you require extensive information regarding disease prevelence before choosing vaccinations for your pet?
  • Do you believe in separating vaccines, or in not giving them?
  • Are you someone who feels good health care for your pet is worth the expense?
  • Do you have views on ?holistic health??
  • Do you tend to lean more toward conventional health care, or do you integrate?

Animal clinics are not created equally, and it is sometimes difficult to sort through the services to know if you will receive what you need. However, by first answering these basic questions about yourself, you should begin to know what factors matter most to you. If you need flexibility, make sure you find a doctor who is OK with this. If you need security, more structured health guidelines might be helpful to you.

There are other factors besides your general wellness philosophy that are important when choosing the right vet for you:

  • For instance, if you have a cat, you may want to consider a cat-only practice, or a doctor who is board certified in Feline Practice.
  • You may want an animal clinic that also does boarding and grooming so you can feel safe when you leave your pet and go on vacation.
  • You may feel that 24-hour care or 365-days-a-year emergency access is important to you, and that you would prefer to go only to a hospital that can provide these extensive services in addition to general practice.
  • Be aware that many hospitals do not have staff (technician or doctor) overnight to monitor hospitalized patients. Although this does not mean they deliver sub-standard care, there are obvious limitations to this that may be important to you.
  • You may prefer to integrate holistic services in your pet?s care, and enjoy having access to practitioners who offer acupuncture, chiropractic or herbal medicine. If so, I recommend making sure that your vet offers you the most evidence-based medicine possible.
  • Do you appreciate having state-of-the-art facilities, or do you prefer a smaller and more intimate clinic setting?

Recognize that as with most things, services such as 24-hour care, emergency access and more cutting-edge medicine will come with a cost that may be more than a smaller ?mom and pop? style of clinic. Either way, you must make sure you feel comfortable, because your emotional state may affect your pet?s behavior and willingness to relax during a trip to the clinic or hospital.

For me, bonding with my doctor is as important to me as I feel it is for most of my clients. I appreciate that some of my clients are like family to me, and I love being a part of their family, too.

Do you have a question about your pet?s health? E-mail it to pets@northjersey.com. Please include your name, address and phone number.

OUPblog ? Blog Archive ? Just what is triple-negative breast cancer?

By Patricia Prijatel

The big news this week comes from the Cancer Genome Atlas program, which has announced a strong molecular connection between basal-like breast cancer tumors and ovarian cancer. The news stories I have read on the topic provide a great deal of hope for women with basal-like cancers. But the hope is, unfortunately, buried in a greater deal of confusion.

Here?s the hope: We?re getting closer and closer to understanding what makes breast cancer tick on a molecular level, and that means we could ultimately have treatments that target specific molecular anomalies, making the treatment more effective, efficient, and possibly less toxic. Most important, it would be clearer to doctors which patients need chemo and which don?t, saving thousands of people from unnecessary and dangerous treatment. And making chemo for those who need it more precise.

Among those who could benefit most from this research are the women and men with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), which is currently treated with anthracylines ? chemotherapy drugs such as Cytoxan and Adriamycin ? that can cause long-term side effects including heart disease and increased risk of leukemia. Moreover, metastatic TNBC ? cancer that has spread beyond to distant organs ? can be resistant even to current forms of chemo.

The research on the genome project, published in the 23 September 2012 online edition of the journal Nature, ties basal-like breast cancers to ovarian cancers on a molecular level, suggesting that ultimately TNBC could be treated with the less-toxic chemotherapy used for ovarian cancer, including a mix of a carboplatin (Paraplatin) or cisplatin with a taxane such as paclitaxel (Taxol) or docetaxel (Taxotere).

That?s the hope. Now the confusion. The biggest confusion revolves around our understanding of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC).

Some news stories I have read equate TNBC with basal-like tumors, as though the two were synonymous, which is not accurate. There is a correlation between TNBC and basal-like cancers, but not all TNBC tumors are basal-like, and not all basal-like tumors are TNBC. In fact, some researchers break TNBC into three subtypes, including basal-like and non-basal-like.

The other, and bigger, problem, come in the terms journalists and researchers use for TNBC: ?particularly deadly,? ?especially aggressive,? and ?lethal.?

I understand why these words are used; it makes the research appear more significant. But these terms can frighten and depress those with TNBC and their families, and the research is significant enough to stand on its own without hyperbole.

Lost in the hyperbole is the fact that most women survive TNBC. The rates depend on too many factors to offer a generalization, but multiple studies have shown from 70 to 90% of patients with TNBC with no recurrence after five years. And rates for TNBC recurrence drop significantly after three years, so TNBC patients who have reached five years without recurrence often face better long-term odds than those with other forms of breast cancer.

It is a disease to take seriously, but who doesn?t take cancer seriously? Patients and survivors don?t need frightening words for effect. They are frightened enough.

Triple-negative breast cancer gets its name because tumors of this subtype lack receptors for estrogen, progesterone, and the human growth hormone Her2/neu. The significance of being negative for these receptors is that TNBC lacks a targeted therapy, such as tamoxifen, which blocks the effects of estrogen, Arimidex, which prevents the production of estrogen, and Herceptin, which treats her/2-positive tumors.

So, TNBC is a disease defined by what it lacks. But, thanks to research on the human genome, it may soon be defined by its specific molecular characteristics. And treating something you can define is a whole lot easier than treating what you can?t.

Patricia Prijatel is author of Surviving Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, published by Oxford University Press. She is the E.T. Meredith Distinguished Professor Emerita of Journalism at Drake University. She is doing a webcast with the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation on 16 October 2012.

Incident Management: Bringing it All Together - Rothstein ...

Midsize to large organizations don?t often have the ability to respond rapidly and thoroughly when incidents happen. At the same time, public and private companies do realize that risk management is a hot button. Without a proactive, consolidated approach to managing risk?from theft, property damage, data breaches, fraud, sabotage, IP violations, workplace violence and more?companies needlessly eat into profits and may even damage customer relationships.

?When Jeff Francis, an enterprise security director at health system UPMC, got a call from a team member one Saturday, his natural response was to brace for the worst. A visitor, who also injured two security guards, had attacked a patient. Fortunately, Francis was able to log on from home to UPMC?s incident management system and see the report in minutes. He then alerted managers in the security, legal, PR and risk departments. Without such quick action and a clear process for handling, the incident could have escalated into a panic situation?with incorrect information getting to the police and national media. Instead, the event remained largely inside the company and was addressed calmly, says Francis.?

Study Finds Answers For Breast Cancer Patients ? CBS Dallas / Fort ...

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) ? When Terri Thompson was first diagnosed with breast cancer 13 years ago, there was no question about how her cancer would be treated after she had her tumor removed.

?I had to go through 12 weeks of chemo therapy and 8 weeks of radiation everyday, so it was very hard to endure,? she said.

But the findings of a new study could change how doctors treat breast cancer for years to come.

Joanne Blum M.D., the Director of Breast Cancer Risk Evaluation Program at Baylor Cancer Center, says the findings will eventually allow doctors too give patients more individualized treatment.

?We will end up with a big computer print out of all of the different mutations or amplifications or changes within that tumor and then we can say to the that patient, the patient of the future, ?We need to treat you this way,?? she said. ?This is a life changing study for the breast cancer field.?

Researchers studied the genetic components of 825 breast cancer tumors and determined four major classes of the disease.
They also discovered similarities between the genetic components of ovarian cancer and one of the most deadly classes of breast cancer. Now doctors say drugs already on the market used to treat ovarian cancer may soon help treat certain types of breast cancer.

But doctors warn it will be 5 to 10 years before drug treatments and technology catch up with the study?s findings.

?Ultimately, we will get to the point where each patients tumor is characterized and we?re getting there but we are not there yet,? said Dr. Blum.

?It would have affected me tremendously because they know what type of tumor it is prescribe the treatment and therapy specific for my type of tumor,? Thompson said.

Meanwhile for patients like Thompson, the breakthrough, even if it will only affect future patients, is a welcome one.

Silent War on Women Rally at Texas Capitol

Spurred by a growing sense of frustration and disenfranchisement, nearly one hundred women and men gathered Saturday at the south gates of the Texas Capitol on August 25, 2012 to protest what has been described by some activists as a "war on women."

The idea for the protest came from Kaci Beeler, a local actor, designer, and artist who told Austinist that the recent appellate court decision allowing Texas to defund Planned Parenthood was the trigger for her. She explained to us that she had "...been following the GOP hailstorm about abortion rights and all of that stuff, and what's been happening in Arizona. And then Wednesday, when I read about the Court of Appeals overturning funding for Planned Parenthood, that was upsetting. Reading about it and realizing that...it felt extremely unfair."

READ MORE HERE

It was a silent protest, the better to express the sense of disenfranchisement many of the participants said they felt. There was no chanting, there were no picket signs. Instead, women wore paper targets on their bodies to symbolize the targeting of their rights by policymakers and legislators. They, their children, and the men - brothers, husbands, boyfriends, and friends - spoke quietly among themselves as traffic rolled by on 11th Street.

Gillispie resigns as Texas Tech basketball coach

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) ? Texas Tech fans had pinned their basketball hopes on Billy Gillispie.

He had turned around two other flagging programs in the state, and they hoped he would do the same for the Red Raiders.

They watched a difficult first year in which Texas Tech won just one Big 12 game. Now fans won't get a chance to see a possible turnaround similar to what the 52-year-old coach had done at UTEP and Texas A&M.

Gillispie, a West Texas native, resigned on Thursday, citing health concerns.

"Billy has decided to focus on his health, and we wish him a full recovery," athletic director Kirby Hocutt said in a news release. "We are proud of the young men that he has brought to this campus. Billy's decision allows him to concentrate on his well-being and allows us to turn our attention to preparations for the upcoming season."

Gillispie didn't immediately return a call or text from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Gillispie will be paid the remainder of this contract year, about seven-months' worth, or about $467,000. Chris Walker, who took over day-to-day operations, will remain in that position until an interim head coach is chosen.

Gillispie's resignation letter said he appreciated the opportunity to coach the Red Raiders, but that he needed to tend to his health, officials said.

The move came less than a month after the school announced it was looking into allegations of player mistreatment last fall by the veteran coach ? a sensitive topic at Texas Tech, given the 2009 firing of football coach Mike Leach after claims that he mistreated a player suffering from a concussion.

Hocutt, who declined to make further comment Thursday, earlier this month called the allegations "very troubling."

In January, the school reprimanded Gillispie and assistant coach Brooks Jennings after a review found the team had exceeded practice-time limits in 2011. The school reported the secondary violation to the NCAA and penalized itself by reducing the team's practice time by about 12 hours.

While all that was filtering out, Gillispie's health was apparently growing worse.

Twice in a 10-day span this past month, 911 calls were made from Gillispie's home. The first, on Aug. 31, came hours before he was to meet with Hocutt and led to a six-day stay in a Lubbock hospital. The two men never met to discuss the allegations.

Gillispie wasn't taken to the hospital after the second call on Sept. 10. But the following day, he left for the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where he said he got treatment for kidney problems and abnormal headaches. Doctors there told him to avoid stress for 30 days.

Gillispie succeeded Pat Knight, who went 50-61 in his three-plus years. Knight had taken over after his father resigned in February 2008.

Five years ago, Gillispie was one of the hottest names in the college game and had reached a pinnacle: coaching at perennial powerhouse Kentucky.

That peak lasted just two years. He was fired from Kentucky in 2009 after going 40-27 in two seasons, and the Wildcats missed the NCAA tournament for the first time in 17 years. When he returned to coaching at Texas Tech two years later, he came cheap. He went from an annual salary at Kentucky of $2.3 million to $800,000 a year at Texas Tech, signing a five-year contract to succeed Pat Knight.

In late 2009, Gillispie and Kentucky settled lawsuits against each other, with the former Wildcats coach getting about $3 million with no admission of wrongdoing from the school. Six months after his firing, Gillispie sought treatment at John Lucas' substance-abuse program in Houston following his third arrest for drunken driving in 10 years.

Gillispie's first two years as a college head coach were at UTEP in the Western Athletic Conference. He made headlines there for the biggest turnaround in basketball history, taking the Miners from 6-24 in 2002-03 to 24-8 the following year.

The conference named him coach of the year in 2004, the same year he was a finalist for the Naismith Coach of the Year ? the first of three times he made the final cut. He was then an adept recruiter, and he stayed in close contact with scores of Texas high school coaches to stay in the loop about the state's talent.

He later went to Texas A&M, taking a downtrodden program and leading the Aggies to three consecutive 20-win seasons after they went winless in Big 12 play the year before he got there. At the end of Gillispie's first year with the Aggies in 2005, he was named the AP's Big 12 coach of the year.

It was the NIT after his first season and the NCAA tournament after the next two ? getting the Aggies to the round of 16 in 2007. But Kentucky came courting, and two weeks after his final game with the Aggies, a 65-64 loss to Memphis in the NCAA regional semifinals, he left Texas for the Bluegrass State.

Gillispie is among the basketball coaches who have lost significant amounts of money because of investments with David Salinas, who committed suicide last year as federal investigators probed his management of college coaches' money.

Baylor's Scott Drew, former Arizona coach Lute Olson, former Utah coach Ray Giacoletti ? now an assistant at Gonzaga ? and Baylor football coach Art Briles, who previously coached at Houston, also invested.

Shazam wants to dominate the TV market, and here's how

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Shazam has long been an essential companion to the radio, tagging songs so that anyone can track down what they are listening to at any time.

Now Shazam is pursuing the television market, launching a major update to its app that will enable its 80 million users in the U.S. to tag any TV program on any channel.

"We're still very much a music company, but we've squarely moved into the companion app space," Doug Garland, chief revenue office of Shazam, told TheWrap. "Now you can tag any show and what you'll get back is a rich experience that gets you more engaged with TV programming, more invested with the show. "

By tagging a show, users can not only identify what the show is, but access cast information and celebrity news, play trivia, engage with other viewers on social media and identify the music being used.

Shazam will pull celebrity news from 140 different sources, and leverage resources like IMDb to augment its content offerings.

"You'll see people engage with a show while it's on air, but I don't necessarily think it'll be in a way where you distract them from the show," Garland said. "It's a buzz tidbit, a mini content snack. You get more invested in the show the next time you watch."

Shazam has partnered with specific shows and partners in the past, such as the Super Bowl and the Olympics, but this marks a major expansion of its Shazam for TV initiative, one the company hopes will make it a ubiquitous appendage for viewers of the silver screen.

Over the past couple of years, dozens of companies have entered the TV companion - or "second screen" - space, hoping to capitalize on the growing number of consumers with smartphones and tablets. Since TV viewers are on other devices while watching television, networks have a new platform for self-promotion, and app developers have a new place to sell advertising.

Yet even the most popular, such as GetGlue and Yahoo's IntoNow, have only amassed audiences of a few million. Each service offers a different "second screen" experience, causing even those within the industry to acknowledge the need for consolidation and standardization.

This is an opportunity Shazam hopes to exploit, as its massive user base - 250 million worldwide, 80 million in the U.S. - gives it scale like no other.

"Nobody else out there in the TV companion space that has the reach we do," Garland said. He noted that the company adds two million users a week and processes upwards of 10 million tags a week.

Scale actually delayed Shazam's move into the TV space. Its music tagging software utilizes a library of existing sound fingerprints.

Tagging live TV demanded a different kind of audio recognition technology.

"I liken it to my days at Google," Garland said. "When we thought about doing things at Google, we couldn't think about doing it for handful of users, we had to think for millions and millions of users."

Whether those millions of users are as interested in tagging TV as music will determine the future of Shazam.
